When this was invested in mid 2013, it was intended as an upgrade from a previous single-core dedicated server that only ran a web server. To make use of all of the memory and cores, and also as both my gaming computer and this server had the same CPU architecture, VirtualBox was used in headless mode. Each VM was created locally and then transferred to the server, making the setup quite easy. However, if anything broke down, the VMs had to be transferred over locally, modified so they would work, and then transferred back. This rarely happened, but when it did, it causes severe downtime.

In late 2018, I replaced my setup with Proxmox, making it a lot easier to manage each VM, also adding the support for LXC. As Proxmox is built on top of KVM, this added a lot of features that made hosting a set number of VMs less costly.

Summer 2020 the server struggled with hardware failures, so it was replaced with an upgrade, keeping only the chassi and storage. Due to this, the electric bill was halved.
